I believe that regular parent communication is essential in the elementary classroom. This communication should not be limited to a simple weekly newsletter and a few parent-teacher conferences. In fact, I believe that successful conferences should be focused only on goal setting, as parents should be aware of any concerns well before conferences come around. Parents should understand that they are an essential part of their child's educational team, along with their classroom teacher.
I foster positive relationships with parents by reaching out with positive feedback within the first week of school. I make sure that I continue to send home positive communication on a regular basis, so that, when an issue does arise, I already have a positive relationship with that parent. I have communicated with parents through Class Dojo and Remind. In my own classroom, I would also provide parents with a Google Voice phone number, so that they could call me if the need arises.
